REVIEW: And I Darken by Kiersten White

Book Blurb: NO ONE EXPECTS A PRINCESS TO BE BRUTAL. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

My Review: This book is a retelling of the story of Vlad Tepes a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler a.k.a. Dracula. Except Vlad is now a girl in this novel. I have heard a lot of hype around this book for awhile and I was really on the fence about reading it. But I'm glad I did. The story did drag for me until about 200 pages in and then it got interesting. A lot of stuff goes down in this book and Lada has been a bloodthirsty bitch since she was a child. I feel like all Lada wanted was to be a boy throughout this entire book. She doesn't act like a girl at all, she actually makes an effort to rebel against anything that pertains to being a girl. Poor Lada, I felt for her bloodthirsty ass. Lol

I really enjoyed most of the characters in this novel. I also really loved the love triangle between Lada, Radu (her younger brother) and Mehmed. I feel for poor Radu and his unrequited love for Mehmed. Of course, there were moments between Mehmed and Radu that makes it seems like there could be something there in the future. But right now Mehmed is so in love with Lada it's sad because she won't admit her feelings for him. I wanted to smack her sometimes for being so hard-headed. The ending though just makes me want to continue reading the rest of the series.

Rating: ★★★★☆
